I Joined the AMA & Registered with the FAA for Two Reasons

Amateur/Hobby/Sport Radio Controlled (RC) and Drone Pilots alike:

With regards to this development (article link listed below), as the Drone Racing Club (DRC) President, I am recommending that all Amatuer/Hobby/Sport RC/Drone Pilots who actively fly for fun or competitively join the AMA first then register with the FAA on or before the February 19th deadline ($5 fee or FREE before midnight Jan.20th, 2016).

I admittedly have not been a Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) member thus far but now have decided to join today for two reasons. I would suggest you do the same:

Reason 1. The AMA is the only long standing and established organization that can represent who I am as a Radio Controlled Hobby/Sport Drone pilot. No other independent organization has influenced Federal, State, County or City laws or ordinances in a positive way like the AMA. They have the legal team and financial backing of the members to continue to fight for our rights as hobbyist or sport pilots (FPV Racing specifically).

Reason 2. AMA membership ensures you are allowed to continue flying as you have in the past as long as you abide by the AMA flight safety guidelines. The FAA MUST allow this per the FAA modernization and reform act of 2012.
The AMA needs our support and you need the ability to fly within reason (AMA Guide is not prohibitive to most outdoor RC activity).

STEP 1: Click here to join the AMA: https://www.modelaircraft.org/joinnew.aspx
STEP 2: Click here to register yourself with the FAA (registration link at the bottom of the article):

Affix your AMA membership number and/or FAA Pilot registration number to your RC/Drone Aircraft if it is .55lbs or more when flying outside......even in your yard!

The Drone Racing Club (DRC) board of directors will be meeting this week to discuss the requirement of AMA membership and/or FAA registration at all our outdoor events. Please stay tuned for more details!

This seems like a good idea overall for anyone doing alot of flying for fun or professionals. Toys drones, planes etc, I think dont really qualify, although the lines seems to be a little blurry in some cases depending on size and features.
